Şanlıurfa, located 93 miles east of Gaziantep and 1,300 km (808 miles) southeast of Istanbul, is known as one of the most interesting and historic cities in southeastern Turkey.
Turkish people refer to Urfa, the common name of the city, as "city of prophets". According to both Bible and Qu'ran, it's where Abraham was born and lived before migrating to Canaan now known as Palestine.
The Old Testament prophets Jethro, Job, Elijah, and Abraham all lived in this city. The region was also home to Prophet Moses working as a shepherd for seven years in the region before returning to Egypt.
The first churches in Sanliurfa were constructed openly and early Christians were permitted to worship freely. This resulted in a uniquely eclectic architecture where temples became synagogues, synagogues became churches, and then churches became mosques.
