Niğde is situated in Cappadocia Region, and contains a number of cave settlements, churches, and more. Niğde is located near many ancient trade routes; most importantly the road from Kayseri (ancient Caesarea) to the Cilician Gates. Several cultures have existed here throughout history: Hittites, Assyrians, Greeks, Armenians Romans Byzantines Turks from 1166 onwards.


Niğde became a major center some time around the 13th century. Niğde had been captured by many Turkish empires, including Karaman Beylik and Eretna Beylik. It was not taken by the Ottomans until the time of Mehmet II in 15th century.


Alaeddin Mosque, Sungur Bey Mosque and his tomb, belonging to the 14th century with Mongol rule prevailing; and Hudavend Hatun Mausoleum built in 1312 are important Muslim buildings in Nigde. The 15 th century AkMedresse is another building complex, and now converted to an archaeological museum displaying findings from the area. Besides city ruins, towns of Nigde also hold many remarkable ruins from these early periods.


You can find Kemerhisar, 5 kilometers south of Bor, which was the location for an ancient Roman city. As well as finding remnants from the Romans, you can also find Hittite ruins in this nearby town.


Gumusler is an important place for history enthusiasts. There are more than one thousand years of Byzantine monasteries and churches that still stand. The high columns and walls with amazing frescoes make this a must see wonderland.
