Zilkale Castle Zilkale Castle, a remarkable historical structure located in the Firtina Valley of the Pontic Mountains, is one of the most significant sites in Çamlıhemşin district of Rize Province, situated in Turkey's Black Sea Region. It is widely regarded as the most enigmatic and romantic castle in Turkey, nestled amidst lush forests and cascading waterfalls, perched atop a rugged valley. At an altitude of 1,130 meters (3,710 feet), Zilkale Castle overlooks the Fırtına River, which flows approximately 380 meters (1,250 feet) below. The bridge that runs southeast of the castle is positioned at an elevation of 750 meters (2,460 feet). Historical accounts suggest that Zilkale Castle was constructed between the 14th and 15th centuries. The castle comprises three castles, namely the Outer Castle, Middle Castle, and Inner Castle. To access the entrance of the Outer Castle, visitors must follow a pathway in a northwestern direction. The Middle Castle consists of barracks for soldiers, a possible chapel, and a main tower with arched windows on its eastern side and loopholes on other sides. Rize's most picturesque and breathtaking castle is undoubtedly Zilkale Castle. Every year, the castle draws numerous visitors, with even more arriving during the summer season.
