Zilkale Castle Zilkale Castle is located in the Firtina Valley of the Pontic Mountains and one of the most important historical structures in Çamlıhemşin district of Rize Province within Black Sea Region. The most mysterious and romantic castle in Turkey, Zilkale is surrounded by forests and waterfalls; located at the top of a rough valley. The castle is built at an altitude of 1,130 meters (3,710 feet), and sits at the edge of a cliff overlooking the Fırtına River approximately 380 meters (1,250 feet) below. The bridge runs southeast of it at an elevation of 750 meters (2,460 feet). Zilkale Castle is said to have been built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Zilkale consists of three castles: outer walls, middle walls, and inner castle. Access to the Outer Castle's entrance is through a pathway in northwest direction. In Middle Castle there are garrison quarters (apartments for soldiers), possible chapel, and head tower with arch windows on the east side of tower wall and loopholes on other sides. Zilkale Castle is the most beautiful and scenic castle in Rize. The castle draws in throngs of visitors year-round, with more people stopping by during the summer season.
