Karahisar Castle

Karahisar Castle

The Karahisar Castle (Karahisar Kalesi) - which can be found in a protected area within the city centre - is closely associated with the formation of Afyonkarahisar's name.

Karahisar Castle

Construction of Karahisar Castle began around 1350 BC in order to house the Ottoman treasury, provide an amazing view and reach 226 meters. At the summit of the castle, visitors can observe Phrygian traces and statues dedicated to Mother Goddess Kybele. The walls were repaired during Alaaddin Keykubat Seljuk Sultan's time, and a mosque was built near the site. Nearby is an ancient tower called Maidens Tower which can also be seen on site.

The Castle in Karahisar has evolved into a place that locals use to express their wishes for upcoming events. Those who want to get married shout down from the Maiden Tower, saying “O my faith, my faith, O my golden throne! It is time for me to get married!” Other times, "It is time to have a child" wishes rise from the castle. Locals believe going to Karahisar Castle will cause you to 'stick' in Afyonkarahisar for seven years:)
