Artvin (Livane) Castle

Artvin (Livane) Castle

Artvin Livane Castle (Livane Kalesi) is a historically significant fortress located in Artvin Province, in northeastern Türkiye. Although lesser known than other regional strongholds, it reflects the strategic importance of Artvin as a frontier zone connecting Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea hinterland.

The castle is situated near the historic Livane area, associated with today’s Artvin city center and the Çoruh River basin. Built on a steep, rocky hill, it overlooks surrounding valleys and historically controlled mountain passes as well as key trade and military routes.

The name Livane derives from the medieval Georgian administrative region of Livani, which formed part of the wider Tao-Klarjeti cultural and political landscape. The fortress is generally dated to the early medieval period, though archaeological evidence suggests that it incorporates earlier structural foundations.

Throughout history, Artvin Livane Castle was controlled by several powers, including Georgian principalities, Byzantine authorities, the Seljuks, and later the Ottoman Empire. Its repeated change of hands reflects the region’s long-standing role as a contested borderland.

Architecturally, the castle was constructed using locally sourced cut stone and designed primarily as a defensive military structure rather than a residential complex. Surviving remains include sections of thick defensive walls and watchtower elements, all carefully adapted to the natural rock formations of the site.

Livane Castle forms part of a broader network of medieval fortifications in Artvin, alongside sites such as Ardanuç (Gevhernik) Castle, Şavşat Castle, and the ecclesiastical complexes of İşhan and Barhal. Together, these monuments highlight Artvin’s role as a meeting point of cultures, religions, and empires.

Today, Artvin Livane Castle survives largely in ruined condition, with no major restoration works undertaken. Access to the site can be challenging, yet this untouched state preserves its authentic and atmospheric character, making it especially appealing to history enthusiasts, cultural travelers, and adventure-oriented visitors.

Rather than grandeur, the importance of Livane Castle lies in its representation of medieval frontier defense, Georgian–Anatolian cultural continuity, and the deep historical layers of Artvin beyond its renowned natural landscapes.
